The South African State Theatre complex in Pretoria, at completion in May of 1981, was the largest complex of its kind in the southern hemisphere.
The complex consists of 5 theatres and a large public square, as well as a number of restaurants and a coffee shop. The various venues are able to accommodate any large gathering, from performances, to product launches, or other important events.
The interior of the complex is decorated by many art works specially commissioned from local artists.
The theatre has housed many world class operas, ballets, musicals, dramas and Children’s Theatre. Some well known shows that have been performed at the State Theatre include Cats, Phantom of the Opera, Sound of Music and Sarafina!
The theatre continues to keep a full schedule of international and local performances.
The State Theatre is dependent on public funding. Many of their facilities are available to rent for events. Decor, costumes, props and furniture from previous performances are also available for hire.
